Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting

The Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting was established to give guidance, direction, leadership and vitality in the spiritual phase of Scouting within the Diocese of Portland, Maine.

The Catholic Committee on Scouting is responsible for:

  • Promoting the religious emblems program and recognitions.
  • Training of religious emblem counselors and leaders in spiritual development.
  • Promoting scouting as youth ministry for parishes.
  • Providing spiritual enrichment for scouts through various activities such as retreats, prayer services and a camporee retreat.
  • Recognition of both those who have completed requirements set forth by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting and those who have given so much of their time and talents.
  • Documenting all those who have been trained, attended functions and received recognitions.
  • Working with other departments of the Offices of Religious Education and Youth Ministry and the scouting community to help fulfill the needs of our youth and leaders.

The Catholic Committee on Scouting has the services available to promote and enhance the programs for Catholic Scouts within the Diocese of Portland ME.

Catholic Scouting plays an important role in the development of our children’s relationship with the Lord and with His Church. We are always grateful for the Catholic Committee members and our scout leaders for their many hours of dedication and hard work. We hope that more of our youth and adults join in Catholic Scouting and pray that Almighty God may continue to bless the work of this very important ministry.

Catholic Scouting Religious Emblems

The religious emblems program was developed as a faith development, not a religious education program. In many cases, the program provides a unique experience that enhances the formal religious education the scout is receiving. It is not designed to replace the scout’s participation in his or her parish’s religious education program.
